Cre8 Sustainability -a creative agency for environmental education

Picture
This video shows one of our window farming projects in an inner city school in Dublin 8.  It was made by Mia from Ishka films and the music is by Irish band Ana Gog. The project was made possible by Fiona Collins -principle at Francis St CBS and with the support of community horticulturist Michael Reynolds- his involvement in plant selection, student engagement and general maintenance has been invaluable.
Cre8 Sustainability is a creative agency for environmental education. 'Cre8' is for Creativity and 'Sustainability' is for living in a way which allows future generations to thrive in harmony with nature.  Previous projects include working with students and teachers to build hydroponic window farms in their school (as seen in the video above), raising awareness of environmental issues such as water conservation and local food systems while also getting them creatively engaged through brain-storming solutions, using their hands and working as a community.

In the past 18 months, Cre8 Sustainability has worked with over 200 second level students through school workshops. Now with funding from the Department of Environment, a further 22 schools will be reached in the greater Dublin Area.

I had the chance to develop this initiative while taking part in an Incubator Programme with The School of Social Entrepreneurs Ireland. During that time, I realized If I wanted to see a more 'Earth-centric' education system in Ireland, delivering these workshops was just the beginning. I want to see sustainability as part of the curriculum!
I also recognized an amazing opportunity- the Junior Cert is changing and right now courses are being designed for use in its new project based programme.  Just imagine... Cre8 Sustainability could be one of these.

So now I am looking for support, collaborators and partner organizations to come together and design a course that creatively engages young people into action around environmental issues.  I'd love to hear from any interested groups and individuals.  With your backing every school in Ireland will have the chance to put sustainability on their curriculum.

Case Study: Cre8 Sustainability in St Killians
This group in St Killian's went on to win Young Environmentalists of the Year after a Cre8 Sustainability workshop. During the 'Shoal' workshop day they came up with ideas together in reaction to the problems and they decided to create a stop motion animation to raise awareness of overfishing.

"An informative and interactive workshop with the students where they learned about and discussed the issue of overfishing and the pollution of the seas. As part of the workshop students helped make fish out of tin cans which will go on to form part of the shoal exhibition being created by students in Dublin. All the students were fully engaged throughout the workshop and had fun creating art from all their collected tin cans."

Their animation 'Stop Overfishing' is really worth a watch and can be viewed here on vimeo
